Service Description

“Shaping Memories” is open to all levels of writing, both fiction and creative nonfiction. Creativity belongs to everyone. Whether you have a partial draft, or bits and scraps of an idea, this class is designed to help you dive deeper and unravel the truth of your piece. We will meet in an intimate setting and hone in on character development, plot and story structure. With writing exercises, accountability checks, and the support of fellow writers, we will get the story from your head and onto the page. Bring a pen, paper and an open heart. INSTRUCTOR: Ethel Morgan Smith is a prize-winning author of Reflections of the Other: Being Black in Germany and From Whence Cometh My Help: The African American Community at Hollins College. She’s a recipient of following: Fulbright Fellowship-Tübingen, Germany, Rockefeller Foundation-Bellagio, Italy, American Academy-Rome, DuPont Fellowship-Randolph College, Bread Loaf, Virginia Center for Creative Artists, PLAYA. She has also published in The New York Times, Callaloo, African American Review and other national and international outlets. Smith has always aspired to be a writer. Even though she had many positions before making her dream a reality. She was able to nurture and keep my dream alive by reading and taking evening classes in the continuing education program at Emory University. Finally, at age 35, she applied and was accepted into a graduate program to study creative writing with a full fellowship at Hollins University. While she was a student, she came to know of an African American community with a complicated history with the College. The community's original name was Oldfield. Her journey of researching and imagining became my first book From Whence Cometh My Help: The African American Community at Hollins College. Later she adapted it into a play for the stage Africans Violets.
